Court Remands Activist Scott Iguma Over Fraud Allegations Against Real Estate Firm

The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has ordered the remand of Nigerian activist and influencer, Scott Iguma, until Monday, July 21, 2025, over criminal defamation charges filed by prominent real estate company, PWAN Group.

Iguma is facing a 10-count charge related to false publication and criminal defamation, following statements he allegedly made via social media accusing PWAN of fraudulent practices.

In a series of posts dated May 27 and 28, 2025, Iguma alleged that:

  • PWAN collected money from investors without allocating land,

  • The company “sells receipts instead of land,” and

  • Its founder is “the leader of the thieves.”

He further wrote:

“If anything happens to me, PWAN should be number 1 suspect. If anything happens to my family, nuclear and extended, hold PWAN responsible. Even if I fall sick, hold PWAN responsible.”

According to ASP A.O. Nwabuisi, who represented the Nigeria Police in court, the statements were false, inciting, and posed a threat to public peace and personal safety. The police noted that the posts violate Section 24 (1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, and are punishable under Section 24 (2)(ii) of the same law, updated in 2024.

Legal Team Fires Back

A statement shared on Scott Iguma’s verified Instagram handle, @scott_iguma, criticized the arrest, calling it unlawful and politically motivated.

“The Nigerian Police Force has once again towed the path of illegality by detaining our client, Mr. Scott Iguma, for allegedly defaming PWAN.”

The legal team argued that:

  • Defamation is no longer a criminal offence in Lagos State, as per the 2011 Criminal Law.

  • The matter is civil, and police detention has no legal basis.

  • The case shows how law enforcement can be weaponized to suppress dissent.

They also claimed that PWAN influenced the police, stating:

“PWAN used the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Yaba Panti, to detain Scott Iguma.”

The court adjourned the case to Monday, July 21, 2025, for the hearing of Iguma’s bail application and further proceedings.
