In Finding Nina, the camera is both a shovel and a shroud. As JB traverses the dust-laden roads of his youth, the film adopts the logic of a darkroom: the further he travels into the heat of Northern Nigeria, the more his buried trauma “develops” into a visible, unavoidable reality. It is a story that asks if we truly remember people, or if we simply remember the way we felt when we looked at them—and whether the Nina he is searching for still exists outside the four edges of a silver-halide print.
